Landor - New Orleans

Individual Project

Concept Statement: Fresh and creative thinking is an important aspect of the branding and graphic design firm, Landor. With its new location in New Orleans, Louisiana, the excitement from the multicultural city will provide inspiration for their diverse projects and clients. According to Dr. Michael O’Neil, a senior director at Knoll, “planning and furnishings that let people and groups shape their work experience contribute to a healthy and effective workplace.”To encourage this innovative way of thinking and working, a unique office layout and design will be applied. Wrought iron details, strong vertical and horizontal lines, medium wood tones, and vibrant pops of color will be consistent throughout the design to allow for New Orleans’ rich history, of the annual Mardi Gras celebration, to seep through while keeping the design modern. Additionally, multiple mezzanine areas will be on the second floor to mimic the style of the Creole and American Townhouses that are common to the area. As they say in New Orleans, “Laissez les bon temps rouler,” meaning “let the good times roll” in French, willbedisplayed in this office through their work ethic and creative thinking.

-Compared to the living- group, they basically do the same thing, except the living group focuses more on campaigns, while Landor creates an experience for the viewer that is interesting and intriguing.

-They continuously mention the creativity that they bring to their clients, as well as the combination of resources that the company uses to create a brand that is intriguing to their clients' audiences. • Historical

-The Vieux Carre or "Old square"

-Often called 'The Crown Jewel" of New Orleans

-Located on the banks of the Mississippi River where New Orleans was established by the French in 1718

-Originally, buildings in this area were constructed of wood, which quickly decayed because of the damp surrounding areas

-Today, only one original french Colonial building remains, the Ursuline Convent (1750)

-In 1788 the French Quarter was destroyed by a fire. This led to the rebuild of the neighborhood with fire-resistant materials such as new roofing materials and fire-resistant plaster on the interior walls

-After the fires in the French Quarter, the reconstruction of the city led to the "rebirth' of this prospering neighborhood.

-New Construction struck the ground, and townhouses began to form with multiple uses.

-The construction of these homes and townhouses created a "mini-city" that became populated with diverse cultures and became a common meeting place and a tourist attraction to New Orleans.

Spatial Concepts

The concept of 'spatial design' is a discipline that blurs the boundaries between traditional design sectors like architecture, interior design, and public art. The concept takes into account all design elements within and throughout buildings, city streets, and public places.

Sustainable Design Features

  • Solar Energy

Sustainable design features that are included in this project with mainly be present on the roof of the building. Solar panels will be positioned in order to collect sunlight which will then be converted into usable energy to save on energy costs, as well as help the environment by decreasing carbon emissions.

  • The use of native plants

A rooftop garden will be installed around the perimeter of the area beyond the open seating and the pavilion. It will include plants that are native to New Orleans, as this helps the environment and existing wildlife, as well as allowing the plants to thrive in the climate conditions that they are already used to. Some of these plants may include the skullcap flower, Bridal-wreath spirea, Fountain-grass, and Periwinkle, among others.

  • Window Film

Additionally, on all of the exterior windows, a sustainable film will be applied that reduces UV light from seeping through, also saving on energy costs, as well as the lifetime and appearance of furniture present in the building.
